I read recently that Tao is offering a Dim Sum lunch on Sundays. I brought it up to Melissa and she suggested that we check out the $27.50 3-Course Lunch instead. It is from Monday - Saturday till 5pm.
After we spoke to the server, I knew what I had to order as my appetizer. I got the Crispy Vegetable Rolls with Duck Mustard Sauce. I figured it would be a small serving but it was actually three large rolls! I was impressed.

Melissa felt like venturing into the soup option. It looked delicious and had ample (4!) dumplings!

I haven't had good Kung Pao Chicken in awhile so when I saw it on the menu, I knew what I wanted. It was a large serving and I took a lot home for later!

Melissa got the Hanger Steak with Miso and Asian Spiced Fries. She ordered it rare and really enjoyed it. I tried one of her fries and it was much better than I expected from an Asian joint.

For my dessert, the most interesting option was the Chocolate Zen Parfait. It had layers of milk and white chocolate with nuts mixed in between. The scoop on the top was whipped cream and disappointingly not ice cream. Looks can be deceiving!

Melissa got the Mango Sorbet, Seasonal Fruit and Coconut Milk. It looked like a fruit chowder with an island in the middle.

I loved checking out the Koi fish under the "floating" Buddha. Adorable!

This lunch special is a great deal if you want to eat at this otherwise expensive Asian hotspot.

Milk & Cookies
Bakery, DessertsCommentA Groupon that doesn't suck!
After our brunch at Good Restaurant, we stopped by Milk & Cookies (http://www.milkandcookiesbakery.com/) for, well, you guessed it: COOKIES!
In the past, we've used an awesome Groupon deal (click here for more info). This offer is $9.99 for $20 of baked goods and beverages OR $29.49 for $60 worth of baked goods and beverages over three visits (up to $20 per visit).

French? Oui, Oui!
Desserts, Dinner, Drinks, FrenchCommentA Lovely Restaurant Amid the HORROR of Times Square
I haven't seen my friend Ann in YEARS and we planned a dinner to catch-up. I wanted to pick a place that would be tasty, not too loud, and near the Port Authority (Ann commutes in from NJ). I did my best to avoid the hellhole of Times Square and found a great French restaurant, Marseille (http://www.marseillenyc.com/). I always appreciate the opinion of fellow Yelpers! to help me find somewhere to eat!
The restaurant has outdoor seating (I chose to avoid it because it can be distracting with all the people walking and cars). The interior reminds me of a French bistro - loved it!
Restaurant Interior
I got to the restaurant a little early and a cocktail caught my attention - Le Pamplemousse. This is a classy reinterpretation of a Greyhound. Made with Absolut Ruby Red Grapefruit Vodka, Campari, Elderflower, Fresh Citrus & Salted Rim. It was DIVINE. The perfect combination of salty and sweet!
Le Pamplemousse
Ann went with the Pomegranate Cocktail, made with Bacardi Silver, Amaretto, and Pomegranate & Pineapple Juice. I tried a sip - tasty but not as good as mine!
Pomegranate Cocktail
After reading reviews, I was pretty sure I would order the Lamb Shank (the signature dish of the restaurant). I changed my mind when the diners next to me said to get the Plat de Juor: Rack of Lamb. I asked our server and he recommended it as well - I was sold! I got it served medium rare - perfection! It was cooked to the exact temp and just lovely. I'm so glad I got it!
Rack of Lamb
Ann ordered the Beef Short Rib "Bourguignon" - she loved it too!

We decided to split at dessert and since we both LOVE chocolate, we got the Warm Chocolate Cake. So good!

I really enjoyed this restaurant - especially the cocktails! I look forward to coming back soon!

Sundaes and Cones
DessertsCommentNo Black Sesame or Thai Iced Tea Available!
After our yummy lunch at Devi, Scott DEMANDED ice cream. He can be very needy at times. We were close to Sundaes and Cones (http://www.sundaescones.com/) so it was a no brainer to go there.
I read so many Yelp! reviews that I knew I had to try the Black Sesame and Thai Ice Tea flavors! Naturally, BOTH OF THESE FLAVORS WERE OUT! The injustice!
Scott ordered Salted Caramel and French Vanilla (I think?) in a sprinkle-covered waffle cone. He seemed to love it, especially while it was melting all over him.
Scott is so HAPPY
I ordered Lychee and Mango. The Lychee was way better than the Mango! I've never had Mango ice cream (only sorbet) which tends to be fruiter. This was too creamy, with not enough mango intensity.
How could this photo be better? (Lychee on top, Mango on bottom)
Thanks Scott - this is MUCH better!
Scott - future leader of America and professional ice cream model
This is a lovely ice cream shop with both classic and unique flavors. Depending on your mood, there is a flavor for you.

Desserts, Dinner, Drinks, Mexican, Tasting MenuCommentXixa is a Williamsburg Gem
Christine and I wanted to meet up for dinner before I head off to Ireland. She RAVED about a spot in Brooklyn and we decided this would be the perfect place for our dinner. Xixa (http://xixany.com/) is located in Williamsburg. The easiest way for me to get there from my apartment is to take the M train to Marcy Avenue. I didn't realize this subway went ABOVE ground - how exciting! When I got off the subway, I took a photo - you can see Peter Luger (the famous steakhouse) in the background!
Above ground subways outside of Manhattan - it's a crazy world out there!
Xixa has an awesome cocktail list that features many infused tequilas. I asked our awesome server, Allison, for the best way to enjoy the Thai Tea Tequila - she recommended having it on the rocks. Christine got the Apricot Tequila (90% sure...) with the Margarita Cubes - as they melt, they add complex flavors to the Tequila. AWESOME.
Love the menu styling
Thai Tea Tequila on the Rocks
Apricot Tequila with "Margarita Cubes" - seasonal fruit, citrus and small salt cube - instant party!
The interior of the restaurant is beautiful. I didn't snap a photo of our seating, but the table we sat in was super comfortable - it allows you to relax as you're served dish after dish! I did notice that some of the stool seating looks uncomfortable. I'm not sure I'd want to be in a wrought iron stool - my butt would hurt!
The entrance
We requested the Chef's Tasting ($45 per person) - typically, you should have 3 or more people to do it, BUT our server was super awesome and let us do it just for 2! Get ready to be blown away by my description of our 13 (!!!) courses!
Our first course was pickled veggies, light, crunchy and served with a tasty sauce. This was a great way to prepare our palates for the richer dishes to come.
Course 1: Pickled Veggies
Our second course was a wonderfully spiced edamame.I loved it! I think it may have been grilled - it really changed my perception of the veggie from just having them steamed in Asian restaurants.
Course 2: Mexico-City Style Sautéed Edamame, Arbol Chile, Lime, Toasted Garlic
Our third course was a ceviche course - it was phenomenal! The seafood (shrimp and Hamachi) were super fresh and complimented by the fruits and sauces.
Course 3: Hamachi and Shrimp Ceviche
Our fourth course was duck lettuce wraps - I LOVED the duck but wasn't a huge fan of the banana on the side. This is my own issue as I'm not a fan of the flavor (unless it is in Banana Bread, I know. I'm weird).
Course 4: Braised Duck Lettuce Wraps, Mushrooms, Picadillo, Raisins, Peanuts, Roasted Banana
The fifth course was tempura fried Blowfish - it had a bone in it, so we ate around it like a rib. If you haven't had this, you must try it if you see it on a menu. The fish is moist, meaty and flaky - so good.
Course 5: Tempura Blowfish
Our sixth course was chicken wings - I totally forget the preparation. Can you blame me? At this point, it was all a delicious blur and had to keep track of (the menu updates a lot and I couldn't find all descriptions online). This was the least impressive dish. Still tasty, but not a knockout like the others.
Course 6: Chicken Wings
At this point, we needed a new beverage. We both got the Bourbon'd Tequila with Old Fashion Cubes. This was so tasty! I will warn you though, if you take your time on the drink (like we did), the last sip is very very aggressive (all the spices in the cube have melted, so the drink is highly seasoned).
Getting Ready for a new drink!
Bourbon'd Tequila with "Old Fashion" Cube
Course seven was a cheese fundido with parmesan chips and shisito peppers - what is there not to love about melted cheese?
Course 7: Fundido of Taleggio & Chihuahua Cheese with Italian Chorizo, Parmesan Tortillas and Shisito Peppers
Course eight was one of the most adventurous. When you order the Chef's Tasting, you can specific your dietary needs (if you are a vegetarian, etc.) and what you don't like (we were open to bone marrow but didn't want organ meat). The flexibility makes it great to have a different experience each time you go (which I plan to do again!) This course was bone marrow with steak tartare. I've never had bone marrow before and it was lovely! If anything, it is very rich and reminds me of butter. The presentation was beautiful. If you are a vegetarian, it would be horrifying. #meat
Course 8: Roasted Bone Marrow with Steak Tartare
Course 8: Roasted Bone Marrow with Steak Tartare
Course nine was the highly Yelped! about carrots - they were unlike any carrots I've ever had. It was the combination of the cheeses and lime that really stood out. Delicious!
Course 9: Grilled Carrots "Elote" with Honey Butter, Lime Crema, Coriander, Feta, Dill
Course ten was pork belly and pork cheeks. So delicious! The pork had great texture and taste. Absolutely lovely.
Course 10: Carnitas of Pork Belly & Cheeks, Fava Beans, Black Trumpets, Pasilla-Pulque-Prune
Course eleven took us out of savory and into sweet! The churros were awesome and the sorbet served with them was spicy! I enjoyed this one, but not as much as the other dessert.
Course 11: Meyer Lemon Churros with Lemon Cream and Strawberry Habanero Sorbet
Course twelve was a carrot tres leches cake with cumin (!!!) ice cream. This was incredible. I wish I could have another one right now. SO GOOD.
Course 12: Carrot Tres Leches Cake with Cumin Ice Cream
Course thirteen was a nibble of almond brittle (I believe). The perfection conclusion!
Course 13: Almond Brittle
This restaurant is incredible. The value ($45 for 13 courses!) and quality of food (expensive ingredients!) is unmatched by any tasting menu I've done before - especially in New York City where prices can be very high! Also, the timing was perfect - all dishes arrived at an appropriate time and we didn't feel rushed. The temperature on the food was great - it was hot, so it wasn't sitting. This is an excellent restaurant, one of the best I've been to recently, if not in the last several years. You must come here - RUN don't walk.
Cheers,
Liz
Breakfast for Dessert
Bakery, DessertsCommentCereal Milk Soft Serve @ Momofuku Milk Bar
After brunch but before the rest of our day (graduation parties), Aish and I stopped by MomoFuku Milk Bar (http://milkbarstore.com/main/).
After our hearty brunch at Feast, we weren't super hungry, so we split one cereal milk soft serve with the cornflake crunch.
Milk does a body good, right? You're damn right!
Aish had never tried the cereal milk but after her first taste, she LOVED it! It tastes exactly like it sounds.
If you're in the East Village, check it out!

Celebrating Follies 2014
Dinner, Desserts, Drinks, Happy Hour, Mexican, SeafoodCommentA Mexican Fiesta at Agave
We had an incredible Follies this year - the Torchy Awards! We wanted to take the cast out to celebrate with a fun dinner. Naturally, I was all over planning this event and picking the restaurant. I chose Agave (http://agaveny.com/) because I love this place. The food, drinks and atmosphere are awesome.
We had a 7pm reservation and I arrived a bit early...so I ordered a mango margarita - my favorite here! Gotta love that happy hour pricing! BOOM!
Happy Hour!
Once we were all assembled, we had to take a group shot! What a beautiful group of funny people - so proud to be a part of this amazing cast!
THE CAST!
Naturally, we had to order the guacamole! It is so yummy here and served in an edible bowl. I love that they refill your chips - it is critical to maintain the right guac to chip ratio.
Oh, hey there - get in my mouth now!
We also got sweet potato fries to split - served with a chipotle mayo. I'm sure you are aware of my love of mayo, so this was so yummy!
I ordered the Enchilada Mariscos, stuffed with Gulf Shrimp, Lump Crab, sautéed cabbage, queso cotija and salsa verde. Yummy. I did have some meal FOMO when I saw what Mike ordered: the Duck Enchiladas! I sampled a piece and it was soooooo good. NEXT TIME!
Enchilada Mariscos
We ordered several pitchers of frozen margs - awesome call. We also got three desserts to share. My favorite was the molten chocolate cake! The banana thing was ok, but honestly, I'm not a huge banana person (unless it is the cupcakes at Sugar Sweet Sunshine!). The tres leches was good too, but nothing to write home about.
Banana Dessert
Molten Chocolate Cake - WINNER WINNER!
Tres Leches
You know I love Agave. If you trust my taste, do yourself a favor and visit! Come early for happy hour at the bar, then get seated for dinner.

Ladies who Lunch
Coffee, Desserts, Drinks, Italian, Lunch, OutdoorsCommentBottino for Delicious Italian
One of my block 3 mates, Lilian, thought of organizing a lunch for some of us during Senior Week. She had the great idea and I contributed by thinking of a place to eat on the West Side (we were going to the Frying Pan after). I ended up on Bottino (http://www.bottinonyc.com/). Check out the open-but-enclosed seating area. We had a lovely corner table.
You can enjoy the outdoors without being outdoors!
I was intrigued by a cocktail on the menu, so I absolutely had to order it! The Grey Gardens Martini is made with Organic Black Tea and Grey Goose, St. Germain, Preserved Lemon Syrup and Honey.
Grey Gardens Martini
This was a fantastic cocktail! If you come, you MUST get it!
There were so many options on the menu, I struggled with what to order. Luckily, Jillian and I were interested in the same two entrees, so we split them. Problem solved!
Lasagna al Forno with Homemade Pasta, Bolognese and Bechamel
Orecchiette with Broccoli Rabe and Boar Sausage
Each dish was very different and I'm glad we split them. Initially, I was a bit scared of the boar sausage but it was delicious! The lasagna was also so great - much heavier than the pasta but very tasty. Lilian also got the Orecchiette. Kate got the Sautéed Shrimp with Lentils and Garlic, White Wine and Herbs.
Shrimp!
After we finished our meal, we ordered a coffee and got dessert. Jillian and I got the Warm Tuscan Bread Pudding, Kate got the Pecan Tart and Lilian got something with Biscotti...I believe Affogato.
Cappuccino
Bread Pudding
Pecan Tart
Affogato
Usually I LOVE bread pudding, but this one was a bit too custardy. The custard was very eggy and almost looked scrambled, so it was a bit of a bummer. I'd recommend getting a different dessert if you go!

Cupcakes Bring the (Sugar Sweet) Sunshine Out!
Bakery, DessertsCommentMy Favorite Cupcakes in the City!
Who knew I would discover my new favorite cupcake while attending a Strategy Speaker session on a Friday? My professor ordered cupcakes from Sugar Sweet Sunshine Bakery (http://www.sugarsweetsunshine.com/) and I was in HEAVEN!
I chose a yellow cupcake that looked adorable without knowing the flavor. Little did I know that I would be discovering my new favorite flavor: Holla Back Girl! It is a banana cake with cream cheese frosting. I am super super weird about banana. I generally do not like it on its own, but I love it in baked goods, especially banana bread. This cupcake captured everything I love about banana bread and slapped delicious frosting on it!
For the last day of classes for the undegrad course I assist with, I asked the professor if I could order cupcakes. Once she gave me the OK, I ordered 84 cupcakes of a variety of flavors. People tended to love the Black & White...Just Right (chocolate cake with vanilla buttercream), Strawberry (strawberry cake with cream cheese icing) and the Holla Back Girl! Without question, the Sunshine (yellow cake with vanilla buttercream) are amazing and a crowd pleaser.
Beautiful colors!
What I love about this bakery, in addition to its awesome cupcakes, is that it offers delivery. If you have a sizeable order, the $16.95 delivery fee (may change depending on distance from the bakery) isn't that much of a drain and it saves you the time of heading over there and lugging them, especially if you ordered 7 dozen!
Also, most bakeries in NYC have cupcakes that are nearly $3 if not more! This bakery has cupcakes that are *only* $2! I know that sounds ridiculous if you don't live in NYC, but this is a relative bargain, especially given the quality.
When I'm in the neighborhood, I look forward to stopping into the physical location to sample some desserts beyond just the cupcakes :)
Cheers,
Liz
Easter Brunch at Commerce!
Brunch, Desserts, New American, DrinksCommentCatching Up with Some Favorite People
I love brunch so much! I love it EVEN MORE when I can share this awesome meal with people I love. I met both Erin and her boyfriend, JBJ, during my trip to Santiago, Chile during spring break. Since I've returned from the trip, I've had the opportunity to get to know them better and it has been lovely.
I suggested going to brunch and Erin picked a great spot: Commerce (http://www.commercerestaurant.com/). I heard good things about this West Village spot but had yet to check it out, so, naturally, I was excited.
On my walk, I loved seeing all of the blooming flowers. It has gotten chilly again recently, but hopefully it was warm up soon!
Love the window box flowers!
I'm glad we had a reservation! The place was PACKED with eager brunch go-ers in their Easter best! I spotted a couple people in seersucker (oh my). I read on Yelp! that the pecan cinnamon rolls were a must order item! We ordered it and split it as an appetizer.
Can't you just taste it now? DELICIOUSNESS!
This was by far the highlight of the meal. Everything was good, but what can compare with this ooey gooey scrumptiousness? Nothing! I would like to note that like most places that take advantage of holidays, this venue bumped up all their prices by $5-$10 because it was Easter. Sort of annoying, but I get it. People are working on holidays so ya gotta pay $$$
I ordered a Bloody Mary, because, it was brunch and that is what you do at brunch.
Bloody Mary
Our server "warned" me that their Bloody Mary is "very different" and I was a bit hesitant, but I ordered it anyway. It was good though it had a strong horseradish presence. Also, one of the garnishes was chorizo. Although it was very tasty, I am still on the fence about meat products served in beverages. I love bacon but still not 100% convinced I need it in my cocktail as well.
For my entree, I ordered the short rib ravioli with hen of the woods mushrooms and Barolo. This was delicious!
Nom nom! Get in my belly ravioli!
Although this pasta dish was nearly $30 (Easter pricing hike from $22), I felt it was the best value dish from what we ordered. It was a large serving - sometimes you order ravioli and get four. Also, the flavor of the beef was delicious!
Erin ordered the Shakshuka, a baked eggs dish, and JBJ got the Croque Madame.
Shakshuka!
Croque Madame
I sampled each of their dishes - I preferred the Croque Madame though the Brussels Sprouts on the side of the Shakshuka were quite nice.
Overall, this is a fantastic spot and I would like to go back for a different meal! I will also attempt to go on a non-holiday to take advantage of normal (already high) prices!
Loving the tulips in the West Village!
Cheers,
Liz
